From the top of the hill Varanges you will discover a panoramic view of the plain of the Saone, southern door of Burgundy: Givry at your feet, Chalon in the background and on the horizon, the mountains of Jura. Mont Blanc emerges from the horizon on a clear day. You will end with the treasures of Cortiambles: the impluvium washhouse and the Romanesque church. Finding the starting point From the City Hall gate, take the rue de l'Hôtel de ville towards the hills. Leave the round hall on the left and continue straight on the rue de Varanges then Bois Horses to the laundry. You are there. Follow the arrow "departure of walks" to the foot of the vineyard, locality "Les Bois Horses". Follow signs G1 on the right, direction Cellier aux monks. At the place called "Vaux", continue to the right. On the left at the top of the hill you can see the cellar to the monks, vineyard since the twelfth century. Continue straight ahead. About 200 m turn left onto the tarmac road that climbs zigzagging. At the 3rd bend, leave the paved road and take a red dirt road on the right. Go straight up to the place called "Quarries" junction point with the circuit Mellecey ME1 (1). Stay on the Givry side going straight up. Panorama right on Mercurey then left on Givry. Join the crossroads "La chaume de Givry" (2). Turn left towards Varanges. Go down on a wide path between the firs to the clearing of "Varanges" (3). Take direction Cortiambles; go past the Notre-Dame de Varanges statue (since 1866, it is lit every night of the year by locals who take turns to light candles). The path, downhill, becomes stony and quite steep. At a place called "Clos Salomon" (4), follow the direction Cortiambles to take on the right the wide stony path. Downstairs, admire the semi-circle impluvium washhouse. Join the road to Cortiambles (5) and turn left towards Givry: watch out for cars. On the right, the church of Saint-Martin-de-Cortiambles recently restored (bell tower of the 12th century and two side chapels of the 15th century). At 50 m, leave the road past the Clos Salomon and take the dirt road which, in the middle of the vineyards, joins the starting point.
