Chalon sur Saône is definitely a town of pictures: it not only houses the prestigious museum dedicated to the inventor of photography, Nicéphore Niépce, but also “Nicéphore Cité”, a centre of excellence in new technologies concerning sound and image.  Not forgetting the birthplace of Nicéphore Niépce, just 5 km from the town.

For those who don’t yet know the Niépce Museum, it is a shining light in the world of contemporary photography and it is internationally known for its expertise.

Endowed with a centre of resources and production, the museum takes you, alone or with your family, on a journey of discovery through objects, original images and new technologies.

Next, head for Saint Loup de Varennes and the home of Nicéphore Niépce : it was here that he created the very first photograph (heliograph) by fixing the view from the window of his workshop on a tin plate.  It is also here that he invented the first internal combustion engine!
