Set up in 1865 close to the Saône to make it easier to clean the premises, the abattoir was built of brick and rubble stone, not far from the Usinerie, which is currently the subject of an exhibition in the Espace patrimoine.
In 1990, when the municipal abattoir closed, the site was taken over by artists: musicians, graffiti artists and street theatre enthusiasts. Since then, the walls of the abattoir have become a place for free expression, while the premises are home to La Péniche, a venue for contemporary music, as well as the Centre National des Arts de la Rue et de l'Espace Public. We'll also be looking at the past, present and near future of these cultural facilities.
